I've had a sorta love/hate relationship with D&D over the years.
OD&D: Upside: simple, easy, pick up and play. Downside: a little TOO simple sometimes for what I really want in a game. Thaco.
1st Ed. AD&D: Upside: More fiddly stuff. Some fantastic modules within. Gygax's writing amuses me. Downside: We had to houserule the hell out of it due to rules we always found idiotic. Still a little limited in some ways. Again, Thaco.
2nd Ed. AD&D: Upside: Even MORE fiddly stuff. Some awesome things in sourcebooks. Downside: Still had to houserule out rules we found idiotic. Some things were a bit too strict in some ways. Still sometimes not fiddly enough. Yet again, Thaco. Shesh.
3rd Ed/3.5 Ed: Upside: Got rid of a lot of the crappy old rules we used to houserule anyway. NO MORE THACO! TONS of fiddly stuff. You can basically build anything you damn want to. Downsides: WAY TOO MUCH CRAP. My god, just sifting through all of it just to find out what you want-i never thought I'd say there are too many options, but there are too many damn options, and figuring what to keep and leave is a chore in itself.
So 4e. I checked it out. While it DOES have an MMO-ish feel to it some may not like(the classes have roles now of Defender, Controller, Striker and Leader), it's got enough of that fiddly stuff to keep me happy but I don't feel overwhelmed like I did in 3e. Also, the roles are easily enough crossed(you can pick, say, a Defender class but take abilities that lean more toward Leader/Striker/Etc.) It does have quite a war-gamey feel. I hope I get to play it soon.
Made up a rather large and kinda menacing red-haired Eladrin(elf-type dood)named Aureth. Barbarian/Fighter(Striker with more refinement-not a wild tribal man in other words-has some hints of Controller/Defender in there) greataxe warrior with an Executioner's Axe. He turned out rather awesome. I look forward to being able to lay down some law in the battlefield soon. I might even use him for some fiction or something.
Got quite lucky on those rolls, too. Steamroller on the field, here I come!
Finally have a bit more stuff with Isaac done, too that I might post soon! More written in said cutscene-kinda way, but it might be fun to post. It's a little violent, though. That's what happens, though, when a pissed off Hulk-strength gargoyle dood gets involved in things.
